Google Ads Updated Its Terms of Service on July 1, 2026 - What Changed for Every Advertiser

On July 1, 2026, Google Ads updated its Terms of Service for all accounts globally. No re-acceptance was required - every account was automatically bound to the revised terms without any login prompt or checkbox.

Three areas changed: AI automation authority, how your data can be used, and advertiser responsibility for AI-generated content.

What Changed

AI Automation Authority: Google now has explicit contractual authorization to use automated systems to format, select, and generate ads, targets, and destinations on your behalf. This formalized what was already happening in practice.

Data and Inputs Usage: Information and URLs you enter into Google Ads conversational tools and AI features can now be used across other Google Ads features to improve campaign performance. URLs you authorize Google to crawl for campaign setup are explicitly covered.

Advertiser Responsibility: Advertisers remain responsible for reviewing and approving all AI-generated campaign elements. Automation does not transfer legal responsibility for ad content to Google.

Separate Update: AI Creative Labeling from July 13

Starting July 13, 2026, Google requires disclosure labeling on ads with AI-generated visual or text elements. If you run display or YouTube ads with AI-generated imagery, audit those creatives for proper labeling.

Practical Checklist

  1. Review automatically created assets in your account (Campaigns > Assets > Automatically Created)
  2. Confirm that AI-generated headlines and descriptions are accurate and brand-appropriate
  3. Review which features have crawl access to your site URLs (Account Settings > Account Access)
  4. If you use conversational AI tools in Google Ads, be intentional about what information you provide

What Did Not Change

The July 1 update does not affect how your conversion data or audience lists are used outside Google Ads, does not transfer creative ownership to Google, and does not change GA4 or Search Console data usage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did I have to accept the new terms? No. The update applied automatically to all accounts.

Can I opt out of AI-generated assets? You can limit AI asset generation at the campaign level - there is no single account-level opt-out.

Does this change how Google uses my customer data? No. Customer Match lists and first-party data are governed by separate policies unchanged by this update.
