A report on your site's positions in search results is one of the most important documents in SEO. For a US business owner investing in SEO, the rankings report answers the fundamental question: is my money and time paying off? Is the site climbing in Google, standing still or losing ground?
In the US, Google handles close to 90% of all searches. For a US business, a rankings report is essentially a report on visibility in Google, which means the data must be measured for the US market specifically - with US search settings, the right state or city, and for the phrases US customers actually use.
What an SEO rankings report is and what it should include
An SEO rankings report is a regular summary showing which positions your site holds in Google search results for a list of target keywords.
Current positions for target keywords
For each tracked phrase, the report shows the current position in US Google results. Positions 1-3 get the vast majority of clicks; positions 4-10 are the first page with moderate traffic; positions 11-20 are the second page, where traffic is minimal.
Industry click-through studies for US Google results show:
- Position 1: about 25-35% of all clicks for the query
- Positions 2-3: about 10-18% each
- Positions 4-10: 2-7% each
- Beyond the first page: less than 1%
Position changes over time
The report should show not just the current position but also the change since the previous period. Rising positions confirm that the SEO work is effective; a drop is a signal that needs diagnosis.
Google Search Console data
Google Search Console provides data straight from Google:
- Impressions: how many times your site appeared in US search results
- Clicks: how many times users actually clicked through to your site
- CTR (Click-Through Rate): clicks divided by impressions
- Average position: the site's average position for each keyword
How to check your site's rankings by keyword
There are three ways to check your rankings. Google Search Console - free, the average position for each query over a chosen period, but only for queries where the site has already appeared. Rank tracking tools - SE Ranking, Semrush, Ahrefs - daily or weekly checks of a chosen list of phrases in the right country, state and city, with history and competitors. Manual check - in incognito mode, but the result is skewed by location and personalization.
For a regular report, the best combination is a list of target phrases in a rank tracker plus Search Console data on impressions and clicks.
What is specific about rankings reports for the US market
Tracking by search language
The US is not a single-language market: more than 40 million people speak Spanish at home, and in many states a noticeable share of searches is in Spanish. An effective rankings report tracks keywords in every language your customers use, so it reflects real search activity.
For businesses with both an English (en-us) and a Spanish (es-us) version of the site, the report should separate:
- Positions of en-us pages for English-language queries
- Positions of es-us pages for Spanish-language queries (where relevant)
Geography of your customers
US search results differ by state and city, especially for local services. The report should split data by location: rankings in Chicago and in Phoenix for the same query can differ a lot.
For businesses serving several metro areas, each area deserves separate tracking with its own conversion metrics.
Types of phrases in the report
Branded phrases: should hold positions 1-2 without trouble.
Commercial phrases ("SEO agency Chicago", "SEO services cost"): phrases your business depends on.
Informational phrases: build traffic and authority.
Local phrases with US city names: "SEO Dallas", "web design Austin", "marketing agency Miami".

AI answer visibility: a new line in the report
Google rankings are no longer the whole picture. An AI answer increasingly sits above the results, and you need to know whether it names your site. That is why our reports have a GEO section: a list of questions customers ask AI in your niche, which answers include your site and whom AI names instead of you. Frequently asked questions
Why do my positions differ between a manual Google check and the report? Google personalizes search results based on browsing history, location and account. Rank tracking tools check results without personalization.
How many phrases should a report track? For a small US business, 50-100 phrases is a good starting point: 10-20 core commercial phrases, 20-30 informational and 20-50 long-tail phrases.
What do 1-3 position fluctuations mean? Fluctuations within ±3 positions are normal and need no immediate reaction. Focus on the trend over several months.
How urgently should I react to a ranking drop? A sudden drop of 10+ positions across many phrases at once needs immediate diagnosis - it may be an algorithmic penalty, a technical failure or a manual action. A gradual decline over 2-3 months points to competitor activity or a content problem.
